Alberta's New iGaming Market Gains Strong Early Traction

Alberta launched its regulated online gambling market on July 13, becoming the second Canadian province to open a competitive iGaming framework after Ontario. Media Troopers, a marketing services firm, reported strong early results: it ran campaigns for six partner operators in the first week, saw higher engagement, and recorded increases in first‑time player registrations and depositors. The company plans to onboard nine additional operators as the market expands.

The Alberta model separates oversight between the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) regulator, which handles operator registration, standards and compliance, and the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC), which manages commercial agreements, anti‑money‑laundering coordination and public complaints. Ontario's system uses the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) as regulator and iGaming Ontario (iGO) for commercial operations. Both provinces require private operators to secure registration and a commercial agreement before launching. Ontario’s market generated $82.7 billion in wagers and $2.9 billion in gaming revenue in the 2024‑25 fiscal year, a benchmark that Alberta hopes to emulate.
