Alberto da Giussano chosen as symbol for Legnano Pride

Organizers of the Legnano Pride, scheduled for September 13, have sparked controversy by selecting Alberto da Giussano as a symbol for the event's logo. The historical figure, a warrior associated with the Battle of Legnano, will appear alongside the LGBTQ+ flag.

Critics from center-right political groups have condemned the decision. Silvia Scuratiche of the Lega party argued that the figure is a historical symbol of Lombardy and the Lega, claiming its use in the Pride logo is a “useless provocation” and a “ridicule” of local traditions. Christian Garavaglia of Fratelli d'Italia also criticized the choice, describing the event's approach as an “excess of carnivalism” that insults political opponents.

In response, organizers Matteo and Francesco stated that the choice was intended to reflect their identity as queer residents of Legnano. They argued that Alberto da Giussano is a recognizable symbol of the city itself, rather than being exclusively a political icon, noting that the figure is widely used by various local associations and is represented by a statue in the city center.
