LGBTQ+ Pride events and controversies in Italy

LGBTQ+ Pride events in Italy have faced various forms of social and political friction. In Rimini, the Summer Pride event organized by Arcigay drew approximately 25,000 participants but was accompanied by a surge of homophobic insults on social media. Arcigay Rimini president Marco Tonti noted that the backlash highlights the ongoing necessity for public demonstrations for equal rights.

In Legnano, tensions have escalated regarding the inaugural Legnano Pride scheduled for September 13. The controversy centers on the organizers’ use of the ‘Guerriero di Legnano’—specifically the historical figure Alberto da Giussano—reinterpreted with rainbow colors for event communications.

Local political figures have criticized the association of this historical symbol with the event. Mario Almici, group leader for Fratelli d'Italia, questioned the municipal administration’s patronage and noted that the parade route does not reach Piazza San Magno. Silvia Scuratiche of the Lega party described the logo as a ‘useless provocation’ and a ‘ridicule’ of local traditions, while Christian Garavaglia of Fratelli d'Italia characterized the approach as an ‘excess of carnivalism.’

Mayor Lorenzo Radice has defended the use of the symbol, stating that the monument belongs to all citizens and has been reinterpreted in various contexts over the years. Organizers Matteo and Francesco maintained that the choice reflects their identity as queer residents of Legnano, arguing that Alberto da Giussano is a recognizable symbol of the city rather than an exclusively political icon.
