Feijóo pledges to defend Ceuta and Melilla sovereignty
Spanish opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo has pledged to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ceuta and Melilla, stating they will “never be abandoned.” During a visit to Melilla to mark the city's 529th anniversary, Feijóo criticized the government of Pedro Sánchez for its management of the migration crisis following a mass entry of irregular migrants into Ceuta in late July.
Feijóo announced an integral plan for the two autonomous cities, which he intends to present as a key platform for future elections. The proposed plan includes five main axes: defending territorial sovereignty, requiring parliamentary ratification for foreign policy decisions affecting the cities, reinforcing border security, increasing the European dimension of the crisis, and implementing a specific economic model. This economic model would feature reduced Social Security quotas and lower Corporate Tax rates to make the cities more attractive.
To address the crisis, Feijóo is seeking to “Europeanize” the situation. He has met with EU Commissioner for Migration Magnus Brunner and is pushing for the European Parliament to recognize Ceuta and Melilla as the EU's southern border. Additionally, the leader of the People's Party (PP) has demanded transparency from the Sánchez administration regarding any diplomatic communications with Moroccan authorities concerning the migration influx.
