Ceuta migration crisis and healthcare dispute

Overview

The administrative and political tension in Ceuta has intensified as the Spanish government and local medical professionals offer conflicting accounts of the healthcare situation. During a visit to the city, Health Minister Mónica García denied claims of a system collapse, asserting that while emergency and primary care face “extraordinary pressure,” the intensity of medical assistance has decreased by nearly 70% since the initial peak. García reported that approximately 5,800 migrants were treated over a 15-day period and noted that the hospital is operating at roughly 50% capacity. However, local medical authorities have strongly contested this narrative. Enrique Roviralta, President of the Ceuta Medical College, reported that healthcare workers are exhausted and that consultations have quadrupled due to outbreaks of fever and gastroenteritis. Contrary to the Minister’s assessment of bed availability, Roviralta stated that all hospital beds, including those in a catastrophe wing, are currently occupied. Medical staff continue to raise alarms regarding the emergence of syphilis, gonorrhea, and tuberculosis, as well as a death involving symptoms of typhoid fever. Political opposition has escalated following the mass arrival of migrants from Morocco on July 30. The People's Party (PP) and Vox have accused the central government of weak management regarding border control and migratory pressure. In Ceuta, Vox leader Juan Sergio Redondo has called on PP President Juan Vivas to break existing agreements with the PSOE and the Islamist party to form a government coalition with Vox. Adding to the political friction, Ceuta President Juan Vivas has issued a 30-day ultimatum to the Spanish government to resolve the migration crisis, which he characterized as a “state of emergency.” Vivas disputed official government figures, claiming that while the central government reported normality was restored with only 2,500 migrants remaining, he estimates between 8,000 and 10,000 migrants are still present.
