Albertsons launches Safeway shopping plugin for ChatGPT

Albertsons Companies has launched a Safeway plugin for ChatGPT, allowing customers to manage grocery shopping through natural language conversations. The integration acts as a digital bridge between OpenAI’s assistant and Safeway’s e-commerce infrastructure.

Users can search for items, generate meal plans, identify current sales, and convert recipes or photos into shopping lists directly within the chat interface. By tagging @Safeway, the tool accesses real-time inventory and pricing to populate a suggested shopping cart. This allows for complex requests, such as reordering weekly staples or sourcing specific recipe ingredients, rather than manual product-by-product searching.

To ensure security, the final payment process is handled outside of the chat interface. Once a user reviews and modifies their suggested cart, the system redirects them to Safeway’s native web or mobile platform to complete the transaction. Jill Pavlovich, SVP of Digital Customer Experience for Albertsons Companies, stated that the move aims to meet consumers where they are as interest in AI-assisted shopping grows.
