Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta opens with minor crashes and local festivities

The 2026 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta opened with a mix of celebratory events and minor safety incidents. On the opening day, New Mexico police reported seven minor balloon crashes near Balloon Fiesta Park. These incidents included a balloon striking power lines south of the park and another clipping a line during a landing near Hawkins Street NE. A third balloon hit a light pole near the Pan American Freeway NE. No injuries were reported in any of the crashes, and passengers remained safe during the power line contact.

In a separate event in Los Ranchos, the village hosted its second annual Globito Glow. This event featured approximately 60 globitos—smaller, remote-controlled hot air balloons measuring between 20 and 30 feet tall—lined along Fourth Street. Unlike the massive balloons typically seen at the Fiesta, these smaller crafts allow spectators to walk closely among the pilots and balloons.
