Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta
Overview
The 2026 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta opened with a combination of local festivities and minor safety incidents. On the first day, New Mexico police reported seven minor balloon crashes near Balloon Fiesta Park, including incidents involving power lines and a light pole. No injuries were reported during these events.
Alongside the main festival, the village of Los Ranchos hosted its second annual Globito Glow, featuring approximately 60 smaller, remote-controlled hot air balloons. The festival, which has grown from a small 1972 gathering into a massive nine-day event, features signature activities such as the ‘Dawn Patrol,’ ‘Mass Ascension,’ and evening ‘Balloon Glow’ displays.
As the 54th annual event continues, the Special Shapes Rodeo has taken center stage at Balloon Fiesta Park. This segment showcases 117 special shape balloons, including 13 new additions from nations such as the United States, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and North Macedonia. Notable displays include the 120-foot-long ‘Airabelle the cow’ and themed shapes like the red chile ristra.
Adding to the cultural programming, the Monumental Catrinas of Aguascalientes have arrived at the festival. This exhibition is part of an international promotion by the state of Aguascalientes to share Day of the Dead traditions with migrant communities in the United States. Coordinated by the State Government, the Aguascalentense Institute for Migrant Persons (Iapemi), and the Consulate of Mexico in Albuquerque, the colorful artisanal display is scheduled to tour Chicago and New York following its appearance in New Mexico.
While New Mexico law permits adults aged 21 and older with valid identification to purchase cannabis, public consumption remains prohibited on the festival grounds.
