Aldi begins fresh produce operations at UK’s largest automated warehouse

Aldi has commenced fresh produce operations at its Bardon Distribution Centre in Leicestershire, which is recognized as the largest automated warehouse in the United Kingdom. Following the initial launch of site operations in May 2026, the facility began handling fruit and vegetables in mid-September, with the first outbound pallets of produce departing on September 17.

The 1.3 million square foot facility represents part of a £1.6 billion investment by Aldi in Britain for 2026 and 2027, with over £500 million dedicated specifically to the Bardon site. Utilizing automation technology from partner Cimcorp, the warehouse features three temperature-controlled areas, including specialized rooms for bananas and chilled storage for items such as apples and carrots.

Once fully operational in 2027, the site is expected to process more than 1.5 million kilograms of fruit and vegetables daily during peak periods, with over 6,000 pallets departing for stores every day. The facility aims to handle nearly seven million pallets annually and is expected to employ approximately 1,000 people. The warehouse is also noted for its low carbon density, featuring 19,000 solar panels on its roof.
