Aldi automated warehouse operations and UK expansion

Overview

Aldi has commenced fresh produce operations at its Bardon Distribution Centre in Leicestershire, the largest automated warehouse in the United Kingdom. Following the site's launch in May 2026, the facility began handling fruit and vegetables in mid-September, with the first outbound pallets of items such as ginger and avocados departing on September 17.

The 1.3 million square foot facility is part of a £1.6 billion investment by Aldi in Britain for 2026 and 2027, with over £500 million dedicated to the Bardon site. Utilizing Cimcorp automation technology, the warehouse is expected to process more than 1.5 million kilograms of produce daily during peak periods once fully operational in 2027.

To support its growth, Aldi UK has announced a £900 million investment strategy for 2027 to fund new stores and distribution centres, aiming to expand from its current footprint toward a goal of 1,500 locations. As part of this expansion, Aldi will invest £19.5 million in Scotland in 2027, which includes opening a new supermarket in Uddingston and extending five existing locations in Alloa, Leven, St Andrews, Motherwell, and Edinburgh.

Regarding market competition, CEO Giles Hurley has criticized rivals' loyalty programs, claiming some retailers “dupe customers” by using unrealistically high base prices to inflate the perceived value of discounts. This criticism follows a Competition and Markets Authority investigation which found that most loyalty schemes offer genuine savings. To address affordability, Aldi reported investing £340 million in price reductions on over 1,000 products this year, following record annual sales of £19 billion for the year ending December 2025.
