Aldi UK announces £900m expansion and criticizes rival loyalty schemes

Aldi UK has announced a major expansion and investment strategy to increase its market share in the British grocery sector. The retailer plans to invest approximately £900 million in 2027 to fund new stores and distribution centers, aiming to grow its current footprint of 1,092 stores toward a long-term goal of 1,500 locations.

Alongside this expansion, Aldi UK CEO Giles Hurley criticized competitors' loyalty programs, claiming some retailers “dupe customers” by using unrealistically high base prices to make discounts appear more significant. This comes despite a Competition and Markets Authority investigation which found that most loyalty schemes offer genuine savings.

To address food affordability, Aldi reported investing £340 million in price reductions on over 1,000 products so far this year. The company also announced a pilot program with Deliveroo, where riders will pick and pack orders in-store to meet growing online demand without impacting store operations. Aldi reported record annual sales of £19 billion for the year ending December 2025.
