Aleix Espargaró to substitute for Joan Mir at Indonesian GP

Aleix Espargaró will return to MotoGP this weekend to compete in the Indonesian Grand Prix at the Mandalika International Circuit. The 37-year-old Spaniard, currently a Honda test rider, will substitute for Joan Mir, who is sidelined due to ongoing medical issues involving irregular blood parameters. Honda was unable to utilize other options as Takaaki Nakagami is recovering from a collarbone fracture and Somkiat Chantra is committed to the World Superbike Championship.

Espargaró’s return follows a difficult period in his recovery from a serious testing accident in Malaysia earlier this year, which resulted in four fractured vertebrae. He noted that he will approach the weekend with realistic expectations, focusing on gathering data for Honda’s 2027 development rather than purely on race results, especially given the physically demanding nature of the Mandalika track.

The championship battle remains highly competitive heading into Indonesia. Jorge Martín holds a narrow two-point lead over Marc Márquez. Aprilia Racing’s Jorge Martín and Marco Bezzecchi are also positioned as key contenders. Márquez, however, faces a historical challenge at Mandalika, having never finished a Sunday race at the circuit due to various crashes and technical issues.
