Aleix Espargaró withdraws from Indonesian MotoGP

Overview

Honda HRC selected test rider Aleix Espargaró to compete in the Indonesian Grand Prix at the Mandalika International Circuit to address a shortage of available riders. Joan Mir remained sidelined due to medical issues involving fatigue and irregular blood parameters, while Takaaki Nakagami recovered from a collarbone fracture.

Espargaró, returning from a severe spinal injury involving four fractured vertebrae, initially stated his primary objective was to assist the team and collect data for Honda’s 2027 development. However, during the event, he reported significant physical difficulties. During the Sprint race, Espargaró experienced extreme arm fatigue and a loss of muscle strength, noting that his muscles lost power within just four laps. He also suffered a crash during the second free practice session (FP2), attributing it to an inability to handle the motorcycle due to this loss of strength.

Espargaró indicated that his decision to complete the Sprint race was motivated by a “sense of respect for the team's hard work” rather than competitive capability. Following these physical struggles, Espargaró officially withdrew from the main Grand Prix. Honda and the rider decided to prioritize his recovery and upcoming testing duties over competing at Mandalika.

Espargaró will now shift his focus to a two-day test at the Sepang International Circuit to assist in the development of Honda’s 850cc prototype for the 2027 technical regulations.

As the championship battle intensifies, Jorge Martín holds a narrow two-point lead over Marc Márquez. Márquez faces a historical challenge at Mandalika, having never finished a Sunday race at the circuit due to various crashes and technical issues.
