Aleks Syntek faces reggaeton controversy as Elton John prepares Mexico return
Mexican singer Aleks Syntek is facing significant controversy following recent criticisms of reggaeton and urban music. During a performance in Mexico City on September 15, Syntek clashed with the audience and expressed his disdain for the genre, stating, “Mexico is huapango, it is bolero, the mariachi; remember that we are not reggaeton.” This follows years of similar comments regarding the lyrical content and repetitive nature of urban music.
In response to these tensions, the reggaeton artist Wisin, through his Universidad del Perreo project, has offered Syntek a full scholarship. The offer includes covered tuition and access to specialized courses such as “Perreo Intenso” and a “Flow and Rhythm Laboratory.” Syntek has also expressed frustration with the media, stating he will not return to Mexico until journalists commit to not spreading false information about him.
Separately, Elton John is preparing for his return to Mexico after a 14-year absence. For his upcoming concerts at Estadio Banorte, the artist announced a special “Farewell to Mexico” setlist designed exclusively for his Mexican fans. To build anticipation, Universal Music is organizing free screenings of his iconic 1995 Rio de Janeiro concert at various venues, including the Cineteca Nacional.
