Launch and Expansion of Wisin’s Universidad del Perreo

Overview

Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Wisin has launched ‘La Universidad del Perreo’ (UDP), a multi-faceted project that integrates a musical release with an educational ecosystem dedicated to the history and production of reggaeton. Headquartered in Cayey, Puerto Rico, the initiative seeks to provide the genre with academic rigor, documenting its evolution from its 1990s roots to its current global status.

The musical component, released under the W Entertainment and La Base Music Group labels and distributed by Sony Music Latin, features a 12-track album designed to return to the foundational sounds of the reggaeton movement. The tracklist includes collaborations with genre legends such as Ivy Queen, Don Chezina, Jory Boy, Jowell & Randy, Zion, El Bogueto, Trébol Clan, and Franco El Gorila. Wisin has emphasized the importance of documenting the movement’s history, noting that just as salsa and bolero have established histories, the urban genre deserves similar recognition.

The educational structure consists of three modules: the history and roots of reggaeton, urban composition and metrics, and music production and business. Under the persona of ‘Profesor Sandunga’, Wisin has organized a curriculum where various artists serve as instructors.

In September 2026, the project gained further attention when the institution offered Mexican singer Aleks Syntek a full scholarship. The offer, addressed to his legal name Raúl Alejandro Escajadillo Peña, includes full tuition and access to masterclasses such as ‘Perreo Intenso I, II, and III’ and a ‘Flow and Rhythm Laboratory’. This gesture followed Syntek’s public criticisms of reggaeton and urban music, which had previously resulted in audience backlash during a performance in Mexico City where he asserted that Mexican music is defined by genres like huapango, bolero, and mariachi. As of late September 2026, Syntek has not publicly responded to the invitation.
