Alentejo 2030 launches regional innovation and worker retraining programs

The Alentejo 2030 program has introduced two distinct funding initiatives aimed at economic development and workforce transition in the Alentejo region of Portugal.

One initiative, the “SIIDE – R&D Nuclei” contest, provides 500,000 euros to support research and development (R&D) within companies. Co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, the program targets micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises. It aims to foster permanent R&D units and strengthen the link between businesses and the scientific community to increase regional competitiveness. Applications are open until January 29, 2027.

A second initiative allocates 300,000 euros specifically for the professional retraining of former workers from the Sines Thermoelectric Power Plant. Fully funded by the Just Transition Fund, this program supports individual education, training, and certification paths to facilitate employability following the coal plant's closure. The initiative prioritizes growth sectors such as renewable energy, the blue economy, agri-food, tourism, and construction to assist workers in adapting to the energy transition.
