Alentejo region of Portugal reaches 40°C amid heat wave

Temperatures in Portugal's Alentejo region surged to 40 °C on Tuesday, with the cities of Évora and Beja recording the extreme highs. Residents sought relief by heading to nearby river beaches and other water spots.

The Directorate‑General of Health (DGS) issued advice urging people to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat, and to drink water even when not feeling thirsty. The agency highlighted the risk of heat‑related illnesses as the region experiences an unusually hot spell.

The heat wave follows a broader pattern of rising temperatures across the Iberian Peninsula, prompting concerns about water consumption and public health measures in the coming weeks.
