Portugal heat wave July 2026 – fires, dam, recycling
Entities: Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) · Évora · Douro Valley · Soure municipality · OGASSA 42N/VN drone
Overview
Continuing the July 2026 heat wave, mainland Portugal remains under red fire alerts across ten districts, with temperatures regularly above 40 °C, low humidity and strong winds. The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) on 24 July warned that about 50 interior municipalities – including Bragança, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Santarém, Portalegre and Faro – are at maximum rural fire risk, with roughly 70 more at very high risk and over 60 at high risk. Forecasts call for mostly cloudy or partly sunny skies, light west winds and temperatures between 15 °C and 35 °C, but risk is expected to increase from the following Monday across most of the mainland.
On 26 July IPMA raised the threat level again, placing thirteen interior municipalities and the Faro district in maximum wildfire risk as temperatures approached 40 °C and about a hundred additional municipalities were rated very high risk. In the central municipality of Soure a forest fire prompted deployment of roughly 200 firefighters, 46 ground vehicles and 12 aerial aircraft; authorities reported no immediate danger to homes and the blaze remained confined to forested area. During the operation an OGASSA 42N/VN surveillance drone crashed in an olive grove, one of twelve Air Force drones used for fire monitoring. Portugal also sent a joint operational team of 128 personnel and 500 combat rations to assist Spain under a bilateral mutual‑aid protocol for severe fires in Ávila.
