Aleppo launches $9.25 million infrastructure projects for displaced returns
The Aleppo Governorate has launched the first phase of the ‘Syria Without Camps’ initiative, involving 119 infrastructure and service projects valued at approximately $9.25 million. The projects aim to rehabilitate damaged areas to facilitate the return of displaced families to their homes.
Targeted sectors include water, sanitation, health, education, and irrigation. The works are concentrated in five key rural areas: Jabal Saman, Azzaz, Al-Safira, Deir Hafer, and Kobani. According to Governor Azzam al-Gharib, the projects are fully funded by the 2026 government budget, though officials are also seeking additional international cooperation for home renovations.
Implementation timelines vary from one week to seven months depending on the level of destruction. This initiative follows Presidential Decree No. 59, which established a national committee to oversee infrastructure rehabilitation in affected regions. To prepare for these returns, a recent census conducted by the governorate surveyed over 59,000 individuals living in camps to organize the resettlement process.
