Syrian infrastructure reconstruction and economic recovery
Overview
Syria is undertaking efforts to reconstruct infrastructure and stabilize its economy through both local initiatives and international financial engagement.
In the Aleppo Governorate, the ‘Syria Without Camps’ initiative was launched, involving $9.25 million in projects across sectors such as water, sanitation, health, and education. These efforts, concentrated in rural areas like Azzaz and Al-Safira, aim to rehabilitate damaged regions to facilitate the return of displaced families.
Broadening the scope of reconstruction, the government is seeking to revive external financing. This includes discussions with India regarding $265 million in previous commitments for power and industrial projects, as well as reopening debt discussions with the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development. To improve financial transparency for creditors, the International Monetary Fund has also worked to enhance the development of Syrian government financial statistics.
Locally, the Aleppo Governorate has expanded its focus to energy through the ‘Al-Wafa 2’ program, a $6 million project designed to rehabilitate electricity networks in eastern neighborhoods to serve approximately 150,000 beneficiaries.
