Italy wine industry faces early 2026 harvest due to heat

The 2026 wine harvest in Italy is being significantly impacted by extreme heat and prolonged drought, leading to an early start across various regions. From the Oltrepò Pavese to Sicily, grape collection has begun days or even weeks ahead of the historical average. In some areas, such as the Trapani region, harvesting began as early as late July.

In the Asti region, Atima Asti reports that while the harvest is early, the quality of the grapes remains excellent due to dry weather preventing fungal diseases. However, water stress from the summer heat is a growing concern. Similarly, in Trentino, Cavit is monitoring the harvest through extensive data analysis to manage the accelerated cycle caused by warmer spring and summer temperatures.

Beyond the climate challenges, the sector faces economic pressures. Producers are navigating a landscape of increasing unsold stocks, bureaucratic hurdles, and a decline in international exports. In response, some regions are focusing on enotourism and specialized events, such as the 'Cammino del vino' in Pachino, Sicily, and the Campania Wine event in Naples, to promote local identities and strengthen the regional wine systems.
