Italian wine harvest and market conditions

The 2026 Italian grape harvest continues to trend early across various regions, driven by high temperatures and prolonged drought. While previous reports noted harvests occurring 7 to 10 days ahead of schedule, new data indicates even more significant shifts; in Valpolicella, the harvest has moved forward by two weeks compared to historical averages, and in Asti, it began approximately ten days early.

Climatic conditions remain a primary driver of these shifts. In Trentino, Cavit reports a harvest roughly one week ahead of the previous year, aided by favorable sanitary conditions despite warmer spring temperatures. In the Colli di Conegliano, August rains and favorable weather have encouraged early maturation and high aromatic development. In Abruzzo, the Consorzio Tutela Vini d’Abruzzo has advised caution regarding production estimates due to fluctuating weather, though heat has helped limit fungal diseases. In Sicily, specifically the Trapani region, harvesting began as early as late July.

Despite reports of high-quality grapes and favorable conditions for older vines, the sector faces persistent economic pressures. Producers are navigating a combination of climate-induced shifts and market challenges, including declining international demand, falling grape prices, and increasing unsold stocks. In response to these pressures and bureaucratic hurdles, some regions are pivoting toward enotourism and specialized events, such as the ‘Cammino del vino’ in Pachino, Sicily, and the Campania Wine event in Naples, to strengthen regional wine systems.
