Alessandro Di Battista returns to Italy after emergency surgery in Cuba
Former Italian lawmaker Alessandro Di Battista has returned to Rome following a medical emergency in Cuba. He arrived at Ciampino Airport early Saturday morning via an air ambulance after a complex, 12-hour journey involving stops in Nassau and Luxembourg.
Di Battista had been in Cuba to film a documentary when he suffered a severe headache and loss of consciousness on August 28. He was initially treated in Santa Clara before being transferred to the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital in Havana, where he underwent emergency neurosurgery. A previous attempt to repatriate him on September 4 was postponed due to a deterioration in his clinical condition.
To accommodate his neurological condition, the medical flight followed a strict protocol, including flying at a lower altitude to limit cabin pressurization. Upon arrival in Rome, he was transferred by ambulance to the Policlinico Gemelli, where he will continue his recovery and undergo further neurological evaluations. Specialists from the Gemelli hospital had previously traveled to Cuba to assist with his care.
