Alessandro Di Battista recovers from brain tumor surgery

Overview

Alessandro Di Battista, a 48-year-old former Italian deputy and journalist, has returned to Italy following a medical emergency in Cuba. His health crisis, reported as a stroke or severe headache, occurred on August 28 while he was filming a reportage in Cuba. After undergoing emergency brain surgery on September 5 at the Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico Hermanos Ameijeiras in Havana, Di Battista was repatriated via a specialized air ambulance. He arrived at Rome Ciampino airport on the morning of September 12 and was transferred to the Policlinico Gemelli in Rome for continued neurological evaluation and recovery.

Italian specialists had previously coordinated with Cuban medical staff regarding his care. On September 18, Di Battista was discharged from Policlinico Gemelli and returned home. He shared an update on social media appearing with a shaved head alongside Luca Di Giuseppe, president of the Schierarsi Association, expressing gratitude to the medical staff. On September 22, Di Battista spoke publicly via video link on the La7 program ‘DiMartedì’. He credited Cuban doctors with saving his life, stating, ‘the Cuban doctors saved my life,’ and noted that he is feeling stronger each day.

In a subsequent interview on the Vox On Air podcast, Di Battista reflected on the severity of the crisis, stating, ‘At Cuba I was truly afraid of dying, of not seeing my children again.’ He noted that while he faces difficult moments, his latest medical analyses are positive, as the specific molecular characteristics of his tumor make it vulnerable to his current therapies. He also addressed his political relationships, expressing disappointment regarding the choices of former colleague Luigi Di Maio, despite acknowledging Di Maio’s support during the emergency.
