Alessandro Di Battista remains in intensive care in Havana after emergency surgery
Alessandro Di Battista, a former Italian lawmaker and journalist, remains in intensive care at the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital in Havana, Cuba, following emergency surgery. Di Battista, who was in Cuba to film a reportage, suffered a sudden health crisis on August 28, characterized by severe headaches and loss of consciousness.
An emergency surgical procedure was performed on September 5 after his condition deteriorated, causing the cancellation of a planned medical repatriation to Italy via air ambulance. While the surgery was reported as successful, Di Battista remains sedated and under 24-hour observation. His association, ‘Schierarsi’, expressed gratitude for the professionalism of the Cuban neurosurgery team and noted that he is facing this phase as best as possible.
Medical specialists from Rome's Policlinico Gemelli have joined the effort to assist local doctors. Due to the delicate nature of his recovery, his return to Italy is uncertain; some sources suggest he may remain in Cuba for up to four weeks to ensure stability before being transferred to the Gemelli hospital in Rome.
