Alessandro Di Battista undergoes emergency surgery in Cuba

Former Italian MP Alessandro Di Battista has undergone emergency surgery in Havana, Cuba, forcing the postponement of his planned medical repatriation to Italy. Di Battista, who was in Cuba to film documentaries, fell ill on August 28 with severe headaches and loss of consciousness.

After initial treatment in Santa Clara, he was transferred to the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital in Havana. While he had previously expressed optimism about returning to Rome via air ambulance, his condition deteriorated during a transfer to the airport, leading to the cancellation of his flight and subsequent surgical intervention.

Medical specialists from Rome’s Policlinico Gemelli have joined the Cuban medical team to assist in his care. While specific details regarding the exact diagnosis and nature of the surgery have not been officially released, neurological experts have noted that such procedures are often necessary to address issues like subarachnoid hemorrhages or aneurysms. The Schierarsi association has requested discretion and privacy regarding his medical status as he remains hospitalized in Havana.
