Alex Ovechkin announces retirement after 2026-27 NHL season

Alex Ovechkin, the Washington Capitals captain and NHL's all-time leading goal scorer, has announced that the 2026-27 season will be his final year in the league. The 41-year-old Russian forward shared the news with his teammates in a locker room address before releasing a formal statement. Ovechkin noted that the decision was made alongside his family during the summer.

Ovechkin enters his 22nd NHL season with 929 career regular-season goals, having surpassed Wayne Gretzky’s long-standing record in April 2025. His career includes 1,688 total points, three Hart Trophies, and a Stanley Cup championship in 2018.

As part of his final campaign, Ovechkin is scheduled to play several games in Canada, including matchups against the Senators, Oilers, Flames, Canucks, Maple Leafs, and Canadiens. Following his NHL career, Ovechkin has expressed interest in potentially returning to play for Dynamo Moscow in Russia.
