Alex Ovechkin begins final NHL season amid scoring struggles

Overview

Alex Ovechkin is currently playing his 22nd and final NHL season with the Washington Capitals. The 41-year-old captain, who broke Wayne Gretzky’s career regular-season goal record in April 2025, announced his retirement plans after sharing the news with his teammates in a locker room address.

Ovechkin has faced a difficult start to this final campaign. Through the first seven games, he has recorded only one goal and three points, marking a joint-worst scoring start to a season in his career. Statistical data highlights struggles during five-on-five play, where he holds a 28.4 percent expected-goals percentage—the lowest among Capitals skaters with at least 60 minutes of ice time.

His role on the power play has also become a subject of debate. Due to limited mobility, he is being utilized in a stationary position in the left slot. Some analysts have suggested the Capitals' power play unit may perform more effectively without him on the ice, citing his difficulty in helping the team gain the zone.

Ovechkin’s career achievements include a 2018 Stanley Cup championship, three Hart Memorial Trophies, and nine Maurice Richard Trophies. Following his departure from the NHL, he has expressed interest in a potential return to play for Dynamo Moscow in Russia.
