Alex Ovechkin nears Wayne Gretzky goal record with elite metrics

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin continues to demonstrate elite performance metrics as he approaches his 41st birthday and his 22nd NHL season. Advanced statistics from NHL Edge indicate that his shooting capabilities remain among the league's best, despite his age.

In the previous season, Ovechkin led the Capitals in goals (32), points (64), shots on goal (244), and shot attempts (542), while appearing in all 82 regular-season games for the first time since 2017–18. His metrics show he ranks in the 99th percentile for hardest shot speed and the 94th percentile for average shot speed.

Ovechkin is currently positioned to challenge Wayne Gretzky’s record for most combined regular season and playoff goals. With 1,006 career goals, he is just 10 goals away from surpassing Gretzky’s record of 1,016.
