Alex Ovechkin pursues Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal record

Alex Ovechkin continues his pursuit of hockey history as he enters his 22nd NHL season. While he has already surpassed Wayne Gretzky for the most regular-season goals, he still trails Gretzky in total goals when including playoffs. Gretzky holds a combined total of 1,016 goals, while Ovechkin currently sits at 1,006.

Ovechkin is also working to close the gap in even-strength goals, where he has 593 compared to Gretzky’s 617. Following a 32-goal season, analysts note that at 41 years old, his playing time and power-play minutes may continue to decrease as the Washington Capitals roster evolves.

The longevity of Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby is highlighted by the fact that 28 current NHL players were born on or after their debut date of October 5, 2005. This new generation of players includes rising talents such as Macklin Celebrini and various prospects who have never played in a league without the Ovechkin-Crosby rivalry.
