Alexander Zverev advances in Shanghai toward world number one ranking

Alexander Zverev has moved closer to claiming the world number one ranking following his opening victory at the Shanghai Masters. The 29-year-old German defeated local player Yibing Wu with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

During the second set, Zverev experienced a brief moment of concern when he twisted his left foot at 5-5. However, he was able to continue the match after a short break.

With Jannik Sinner having ended his season early due to knee issues, Zverev is positioned to overtake him in the rankings. If Zverev wins in China and reaches at least the semifinals in the upcoming Vienna tournament, he is projected to become the world number one on November 2. This would make him the first German male tennis professional to achieve the ranking, following in the footsteps of Boris Becker.
