Zverev challenges Sinner for ATP world number one
Overview
Alexander Zverev is poised to finish the 2026 season as the ATP world number one, potentially becoming the first German man to achieve this since Boris Becker in 1991. Following a season that included Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros and the US Open, Zverev is currently competing in the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.
As of late October, Jannik Sinner remains the world number one with 10,450 points, but Zverev has narrowed the gap to 700 points. Zverev has the opportunity to overtake Sinner if he reaches the quarterfinals in Vienna.
Sinner’s season has been interrupted by a right-knee injury involving inflammation of the iliotibial band. While his absence initially led to speculation that he might not compete again until 2027, Sinner announced via Instagram that he will return to competition at the Six Kings Slam exhibition tournament in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, scheduled for December 27 to 30. As a two-time defending champion, Sinner aims to defend his title.
To support his recovery, Sinner has restructured his medical support, moving away from J Medical in Turin to work with orthopedic specialist Herbert Schoenhuber and Alberto Zangrillo. Additionally, coach Darren Cahill remains in discussions regarding a potential contract extension through the 2027 Roland Garros tournament.
