Alexander Zverev to finish 2026 as ATP world number one

Alexander Zverev is set to finish the 2026 season as the ATP world number one for the first time in his career. The German player secured this milestone following the elimination of Carlos Alcaraz by Zizou Bergs at the Shanghai Masters and the ongoing absence of Jannik Sinner due to knee injuries.

Zverev, who won both the French Open and the US Open this year, advanced to the quarterfinals in Shanghai by defeating Alexander Bublik in three sets. Despite experiencing ankle discomfort during the match, he secured his place in the next round where he is scheduled to face Alex de Minaur.

This achievement makes Zverev the first German man to end a season at the top of the rankings since the ATP rankings were established in 1973. At 29 years old, he will also become one of the older players to reach the summit, following in the footsteps of legends like Andre Agassi and John Newcombe.
