Jair Bolsonaro appeals court ban on political visits during house arrest

Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro filed an appeal on 24 July with the Supreme Court (STF) to overturn a decision by Minister Alexandre de Moraes that bars him from receiving visits that have a political‑electoral purpose and from publishing any political manifestos while serving house arrest. The restriction, imposed after Senator Flávio Bolsonaro posted a handwritten letter by his father, is set to remain in force until the October 2026 elections. Bolsonaro’s lawyers argue that the measure exceeds the limits of his sentence and violates constitutional freedoms, stating that “the decision imposes a restriction that does not stem from the judgment, the law or the Constitution.” The former president is serving a 27‑year sentence for involvement in a coup‑plot, is recovering from bacterial pneumonia, and is currently confined to his home.

The appeal seeks a reversal of the visitation and communication ban, contending that it amounts to prior censorship and an unlawful expansion of the penal execution regime.
