Alexandre Ramagem says US extradition unlikely amid asylum request
Former Brazilian intelligence chief and ex‑deputy Alexandre Ramagem, sentenced to more than 16 years for alleged involvement in a coup‑related plot, told CNN Brazil at MetLife Stadium that he does not expect to be extradited to Brazil while his political‑asylum claim is being processed in the United States. Ramagem fled Brazil after his conviction, entered the US with a diplomatic passport and has been detained briefly by ICE for a visa violation but released without bail. He asserts that the extradition request from the Brazilian government is a “farce” and that he will remain in the US until American authorities decide on his asylum application. The interview was given minutes before Brazil’s World Cup match against Norway, and Ramagem hinted that he might return to Brazil after the 2026 elections if political conditions allow.
