Alexandria Governor unveils new waste management and urban development plan

Alexandria Governor Ayman Attia has outlined a new strategic plan to address vital urban issues, primarily focusing on a comprehensive overhaul of the city’s waste management and sanitation system. As the current cleaning contract nears its end, the governor is proposing to divide Alexandria into three distinct sectors to improve efficiency. Daily waste production is estimated at 5,000 tons in winter, rising to 8,000 tons during the summer.

A key component of the new plan involves integrating informal waste collectors into the official system rather than relying solely on enforcement. Attia noted that approximately 60 workers have already signed contracts with the official company to ensure organized collection and prevent organic waste from being left in streets after sorting. Additionally, the governor plans to establish waste recycling plants in coordination with the Ministry of Environment.

During a press meeting with media representatives, Attia also addressed broader urban challenges, including illegal buildings, overcrowding, and the management of informal markets. He emphasized that addressing urban density requires planned expansion outside existing residential blocks and stressed that citizen satisfaction remains a priority over investor interests.
