Alexandria waste management and urban development
Overview
Following the appointment of a new management team from Nahda Misr for Environmental Services, Alexandria launched an intensive sanitation campaign. In the first two days of the operation, crews removed over 10,000 tons of solid waste, eventually clearing a total of 15,700 tons from various neighborhoods and coastal roads.
Building on these immediate results, Governor Ayman Attia unveiled a long-term strategic plan to overhaul the city’s waste management and sanitation systems. The proposed strategy includes dividing Alexandria into three distinct sectors to increase efficiency as current contracts expire.
To manage daily waste production, which fluctuates between 5,000 and 8,000 tons depending on the season, the plan seeks to integrate informal waste collectors into the official system. The governor also intends to establish waste recycling plants in coordination with the Ministry of Environment and addressed broader urban challenges such as overcrowding and illegal construction.
