Alexis Tsipras calls Greek wildfires a human and environmental tragedy

During a presentation of the Greek Left Alliance’s proposals for local government, the event coincided with former prime minister Alexis Tsipras’s birthday. Attendance was lower than expected; regional governors of Attica and Crete and mayors of Thessaloniki and Neapoli‑Sykeon did not appear, while Athens mayor Haris Doukas was present.

In a social‑media post, Tsipras described the devastating wildfires sweeping Greece as a "human, environmental, national tragedy," noting the loss of lives, forests, homes and infrastructure. He called for collective mourning, expressed solidarity with the families of the four Greek victims and a Danish pilot, and praised firefighters and citizens fighting the blazes, urging reflection on how to prevent such disasters in the future.
