Overview

Late July 2026 saw large wildfires sweep Greece, with similar blazes reported in Spain, France and Portugal. In late August, the political tension shifted toward wildfire management during a parliamentary debate regarding state aid for natural disasters. Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Evangelos Tournas compared the difficult terrain and access issues in Boeotia to the Mati disaster, while attributing the scale of European wildfires to the climate crisis. However, Zoi Konstantopoulou, president of the Plevsi Eleftherias party, accused the government of inadequacy, citing a record number of deaths and claiming resident warnings arrived too late. The confrontation became personal when Tournas accused Konstantopoulou of “systematic bullying,” and she further alleged that wind turbines were responsible for triggering the fires.
