Alfalfa sprouts linked to E. coli and salmonella outbreak in 15 states
U.S. health officials, including the CDC and FDA, have identified a multistate outbreak of E. coli and salmonella linked to alfalfa sprouts. The outbreak has sickened at least 55 people across 15 states, with at least four individuals requiring hospitalization.
The contaminated products are identified as alfalfa sprouts produced by Everything Sprouts, a Minnesota-based grower, and sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brand names to various grocery stores and restaurants. The FDA has recommended that the company conduct a recall and has advised consumers and retailers to avoid eating or serving these products.
Investigators noted the unusual nature of the outbreak, as it involves multiple pathogens, including several strains of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) and Salmonella. Reported cases span a wide geographic area, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Washington.
