Alfalfa sprout foodborne illness outbreak in the US

Overview

U.S. health officials have linked a multistate outbreak of E. coli and Salmonella to alfalfa sprouts produced by Everything Sprouts LLC of Minneapolis. The outbreak has sickened at least 55 people across 15 states, resulting in four hospitalizations. The illnesses include 46 cases of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli and seven cases of Salmonella Agona. Minnesota and Wisconsin have reported the highest concentration of illnesses.

Following investigations, a recall was issued for alfalfa sprouts sold under the Everything Sprouts and Calco brand names. Everything Sprouts, LLC has since expanded its voluntary recall to include Robust Radish Sprout Mix in 5-ounce cups due to the potential for cross-contamination. The affected radish mix includes lot numbers 223, 226, 230, and 233, which were distributed to wholesale distributors and grocery stores in Minnesota and Wisconsin between August 13 and August 26, 2026. While no illnesses have been specifically linked to the radish mix, the company is coordinating with the FDA and CDC.

Wild About Sprouts, a brand under the parent company RäFoods, issued a statement clarifying that its products are not involved in the outbreak or recall, noting its patented COLD-GROWN® process is designed to mitigate pathogen risks.

Health officials continue to urge consumers to avoid eating, selling, or serving the recalled products. Consumers are advised to discard any existing sprouts and clean any surfaces that may have come into contact with them using hot, soapy water.
