Morelia Film Festival hosts Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro

Morelia International Film Festival Alfonso Cuarón Guillermo del Toro UNAM Filmoteca Medal Mexican cinema

The 24th edition of the Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) has featured major honors and reflections from acclaimed Mexican filmmakers. Alfonso Cuarón received the UNAM Filmoteca Medal, marking the first recognition from his alma mater despite not completing his studies at the university's philosophy and film departments. During his acceptance, Cuarón emphasized the critical need for film restoration and preservation, citing the 1982 Cineteca Nacional fire as a tragic example of lost cinematic heritage.

Guillermo del Toro also received the UNAM Filmoteca Medal and celebrated the 20th anniversary of ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’. In an emotional masterclass, Del Toro reflected on the social and moral state of the world, expressing concern that previous generations are leaving a “world in ruins” for those to follow. He also used his platform to support student protesters highlighting the water crisis in Guadalajara.

Other festival highlights include the presence of Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona and the announcement of the upcoming Mexican suspense film ‘Conejo Rosa’ to be filmed in Morelia.
