Mexico is hosting several international and national film festivals in 2026.

The 31st Matatena International Film Festival for Children launched on August 8 and runs through August 23 in Mexico City and the State of Mexico. Organized by the civil association La Matatena, the event features 73 productions from 26 countries, including nine feature films, three documentaries, and 61 short films. The festival includes 64 screenings across 14 venues, such as the Cineteca Nacional, and offers interactive elements like masterclasses and a children’s jury. To ensure accessibility, the festival provides live translation and dubbing.

The 24th Morelia International Film Festival (FICM), scheduled for October 16 to 25, has announced its official selection of 96 films. The competition includes 12 feature films, 12 documentaries, 64 short films, and eight productions in the Michoacán Section. Directors represent 17 Mexican states, with 40% of the works directed by women and four films from indigenous communities. Winners compete for ‘El Ojo’, a sculpture by Javier Marín. Certain winners in the short film and documentary categories may qualify for automatic Oscar® consideration, and some short films may be invited to the 2027 Cannes Film Festival Critics' Week.

FICM has also announced an international expert panel for the Impulso Morelia 12 program, featuring industry professionals such as Cara Cusumano and Ted Hope. Additionally, the 30th French Film Tour will run from September 10 to October 14 to celebrate 200 years of bilateral relations between Mexico and France.
