Film festivals and water crisis in Mexico

Overview

Mexico hosted several international and national film festivals in 2026. The 31st Matatena International Film Festival for Children ran from August 8 to August 23 in Mexico City and the State of Mexico.

The 24th Morelia International Film Festival (FICM) took place from October 16 to 25, 2026, in Michoacán, featuring 96 competing films. The festival opened with ‘Campeón gabacho’, directed by Jonás Cuarón. Prior to the event, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro called upon Mexico’s Federal Ministry of Culture to support the festival following warnings from FICM founder Daniela Michel regarding precarious economic conditions. High-profile attendees included Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón, Diego Luna, and Gael García Bernal.

Both del Toro and Cuarón received the Medalla Filmoteca UNAM, an award recognizing their contributions to cinema and the preservation of Mexican film heritage. During his acceptance, Cuarón emphasized the necessity of preserving cinematic heritage, citing the 1982 Cineteca Nacional fire as a warning. Del Toro presented a restored 4K and 3D version of ‘El laberinto del fauno’ to mark its 20th anniversary, noting that the Filmoteca’s work “allows us to have a past and a future.”

The festival concluded with ‘6 meses en el edificio rosa con azul’ by Bruno Santamaría Razo winning Best Mexican Fiction Feature and the Audience Award. Other winners included ‘Forensita’ by Pablo Vaca, ‘Cuna de lobas’ by Emilia Schettino Bustamante, and ‘Lo demás es ruido’ by Nicolás Pereda. During the festival, students interrupted sessions to protest the severe water crisis in Guadalajara, reporting the use of contaminated water. Del Toro supported the students, arguing that cultural forums are appropriate for social discourse.
