Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio launches EU forest‑fire prevention campaign from Sicily

Former environment minister Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio, president of the UniVerde Foundation, announced the launch of the “Stop Incendi Boschivi 2026” campaign in Sicily. The appeal follows devastating wildfires in Spain’s Andalusia and highlights Sicily’s status—particularly its western part—as the area of highest fire risk in Europe, according to EU agency data.

Pecoraro Scanio called for a coordinated European strategy, urging the creation of a Mediterranean operational force equipped with drones, satellites and artificial‑intelligence monitoring. He stressed the need to strengthen volunteer networks such as the local Fenice Verde association, to enforce stricter legal penalties for arsonists, and to accelerate judicial processes against repeat offenders. The campaign aims to protect biodiversity, public safety and the climate across the Mediterranean region.
