2026 Spain wildfire season intensifies

Overview

The 2026 wildfire season in Spain has continued to deteriorate. In Almería, the Los Gallardos blaze that razed more than 7,000 ha, killed 13 people and forced the evacuation of over 1,600 residents remains the deadliest fire since the 2005 Guadalajara tragedy. Emergency response is centred on an advanced command post in Turre and involves INFOCA, the UME helicopter fleet, regional fire brigades, civil‑protection teams and the 112 service, with Minister Antonio Sanz coordinating on‑site. The provincial council of Almería has pledged rapid financing for reconstruction and restoration of public services, while community solidarity supplies aid to evacuees.

In Aragon, the forest fire near Orés has more than doubled in scale, consuming over 12,000 ha and prompting the evacuation of roughly 700 residents from five villages. About 450 firefighters, 300 military reinforcements and 30 aerial units are deployed under a Level‑2 emergency declaration.

Ecological groups now link the Almería blaze to illegal, unpermitted housing on forest land and call for stricter urban‑planning, active land‑management incentives and subsidies for agro‑forestry to break fuel corridors.

The Civil Guard has opened arson investigations into three separate forest‑fire incidents in Castellón, underscoring the human‑caused nature of many ignitions and reinforcing calls for stricter prevention measures nationwide.
