Algae & Algae project authorized for biomethane production in Italy
The Apulia region in southern Italy has authorized a new anaerobic digestion project aimed at producing biomethane from algae and agricultural byproducts. Promoted by the Italian company Algae & Algae, the facility will be located in the area between Mesagne and Brindisi in the province of Brindisi.
The project is authorized to produce up to 1,500 standard cubic meters per hour (Smc/h) of biomethane. The authorization also includes the construction of the 'Allacciamento Algae & Algae' pipeline to connect the production site to the existing gas transport network. The chosen site in Mesagne covers approximately 32 hectares and sits near SNAM infrastructure, which will facilitate the injection of the produced gas into the grid.
While the project has received official authorization for construction and operation, it is currently in the development stage and is not yet producing biomethane on a commercial scale.
