Biogas and biomethane production in Italy

Overview

Italy is seeing an expansion of biogas and biomethane production through various anaerobic digestion initiatives.

In San Benedetto Po, an agricultural company has been authorized to operate a 90 kW cogeneration plant using agricultural materials for electricity and heat. Additionally, the company Grande Impero is repurposing approximately 1,539 tons of unsold bread annually into methane and carbon dioxide, using the resulting digestate as a soil improver.

In the Apulia region, the company Algae & Algae has received authorization for a project near Brindisi to produce up to 1,500 standard cubic meters per hour of biomethane from algae and agricultural byproducts. This project includes the construction of a pipeline to connect the facility to the existing gas transport network.
