Algarve water reserves reach 74% amid €120 million efficiency investment

The Algarve region is entering the new hydrological year with water reserves at 74% capacity across its six main reservoirs, totaling 328 million cubic meters. This represents an increase of 13 million cubic meters compared to the previous year, according to the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA).

Despite the improved reserves, officials emphasize that the current availability should not slow down strategic investments. The Portuguese government has announced an investment package of approximately €120 million to modernize the region's urban water systems and improve efficiency by 2028. This funding is split between the ALGARVE 2030 Regional Program (60%) and the Environmental Fund (40%).

Key infrastructure projects include the construction of the Algarve Seawater Desalination Plant and the technical analysis of the Pomarão water intake. Other initiatives focus on reducing water losses in public supply networks from 20% to 15%, wastewater reuse, and the interconnection of the western and eastern parts of the Algarve. Studies for the Foupana and Alportel dams are also ongoing.
