Algarve water management and infrastructure
Overview
The Algarve region has entered the new hydrological year with water reserves at 74% capacity across its six main reservoirs, totaling 328 million cubic meters. This figure marks an increase of 13 million cubic meters compared to the previous year, according to the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA).
To manage these resources, the Portuguese government has announced a €120 million investment package intended to modernize urban water systems and improve efficiency by 2028. Funding is divided between the ALGARVE 2030 Regional Program (60%) and the Environmental Fund (40%).
Planned infrastructure projects include the construction of the Algarve Seawater Desalination Plant, technical analysis of the Pomarão water intake, and studies for the Foupana and Alportel dams. Additional efforts aim to reduce public supply network water losses from 20% to 15%, promote wastewater reuse, and interconnect the western and eastern parts of the region.
