Algeria advances water infrastructure and digital management

Algerian Minister of Water Resources, Lounas Bouzqaza, has launched several initiatives to modernize and strengthen the country's water supply infrastructure. In Sidi Bel Abbès, a project to reinforce drinking water supply is 85% complete. This project will utilize water from the Chatt El Hilal desalination plant in Aïn Témouchent and the Cap Blanc plant in Oran to provide over 70,000 m³ of potable water daily to 17 communes, including Sidi Bel Abbès, with a total storage capacity of 50,000 m³.

To improve maintenance, a new motorcycle brigade has been deployed within the Algérienne des eaux unit to identify leaks and illegal connections more rapidly. Additionally, the ministry is implementing a remote management (télégestion) system to modernize the surveillance of hydraulic infrastructure. Starting with a pilot program in Saïda, this digital transition aims to allow real-time monitoring of reservoirs and distribution networks, shifting water management from a reactive to a proactive approach through predictive analysis and automated data collection.
